Bully of the Wetland Observed in Lamb's Pond - Phragmites

Lamb’s Pond, a small lake located in the Elizabethtown-Kitley Township 10 km north of Brockville is part of the Cataraqui Region Conservations Authority watershed. The lake waters flow into Golden Creek, Lyn Creek and eventually draining to the St Lawrence River.

In 1984 Lamb’s Pond was designated a Provincially Significant Wetland by the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources. Provincially Significant Wetlands (PSW’s) have the most productive and biologically diverse habitats on the planet.

In 2023, Lamb’s Pond Nature Retreat, a private residence and nature-based business observed an increasing presence of an invasive species called Phragmites.  With help from Cataraqui Region Conservation Authority, staff and volunteers mapped seven locations of Phragmites and organized three work weekends to remove one of the patches.

The Cataraqui Conservation Authority recently formed an official “Phragmites Management Area” to meet the challenge of managing Canada’s number #1 invasive species within this watershed. https://cataraquiconservation.ca/pages/invasive-species

In 2024, Lamb’s Pond Nature Retreat together with Golden Creek Horticulture created an official Lamb’s Pond Phragmites Community Group to focus energy on eradicating Phragmites from the   pond shoreline and neighboring roadway areas. With support and collaboration with the CRCA Phragmites Management Area, a Facebook Page will educate local community members regarding management practices and opportunities for help and support. More information is also found on the Lamb’s Pond Nature Retreat website.
